We embrace the shared intentions of the Hyperbody and Metabody collaboration, and as such engage with in a context of hybrid prerequisites. While the Hyperbody design studio will provide a general project structure in the form of a timeline, methodology and deliverables, the explicit combination with Metabody gives us an opportunity and handle to move away from the standard notion of architecture, providing our collective of tech savvy artists with a certain theoretical viewpoint, stance and direction. We therefor decided upon an initial approach and project definition within the broader Metabody context. A general problem statement will result in the formulation of a central abstract problem statement. Which will be the basis for the definition of multiple research questions. Through a general contextual research and it’s subsequent criteria this multitude of development options will be delimited and narrowed down to single research question. This single research question will put us on second concave quest for further information, which eventually will be used to enable us to work towards single solution. <br />

<h2>WHAT?</h2><br />
The structure consists of a suspended facetted mirror-surface. It hovers and maneuvers above and as a reply to user behavior. The structure folds, flips and expands to create dynamic compositions of the real world objects by alternating angles of reflection. The user interacts with the structure as a piece of the puzzle whilst recomposing the total image.<br />
<br />
<h2>Geometry</h2><br />
The starting point is a triangle with angles of 30/60/90 degrees,which is then divided into sections of different sizes. The choise of this base triangle allows for an indefinite repetition to form patterns of different scales of triangles, whilst the further division of this into different size sections allows for a visual randomness and improves the flow of movement.<br />
<br />
As with the kaleidoscope this base triangle is then radially mirrored into a hexagon.This hexagon is then copied a number of times, after which a section is selected. The rectangular selection with long and short edges allows for a cocooning behavior and though being very geometrical and thus allowing for overall control, the optical asymmetry of the pattern creates a dynamic and organic expression.<br />
<br />
In this pattern control points are placed in several aligned knots in the grid. In the choice of points an optimum is aimed to reach the best movement with a minimum of control points.<br />
20 points were then assigned for the placement of sensoring and actuation.<br />
<br />
<h2>Construction</h2><br />
- Mirror foil is applied to thin mdf triangles. <br />
- In these triangles foam is stuck for sturdiness.<br />
- In the MDF triangles hinges are integrated as well as connection points for suspension and spacing for sensors.<br />
- This assembly is then suspended by ropes from the designated knots from a three-piece wooden frame that holds the servo moters and other electronics. <br />
<br />
<h2>Behaviour</h2><br />
Instead of the installation’s reflections only becoming an extension of the user, it is intended that the reflections in their turn become an individual entity of their own. Although they are in essence a direct result of the condition of an object in the physical world ( here i.e. user), they break away from being a passive consequence, as their constellation will also cause effect on the behavior of the user. Here a mutual dialog will emerge between origin and reflection.<br />
<br />
On the course of relation between the physical and virtual world, represented by the user and the Reflectego, the myth of Narcissus and Echo is projected. In this myth both personas are doomed: Narcissus to fall in love with his unreachable reflection, and Echo to be unable to speak independently but can only repeat what is said to her. The parallel in interaction is drawn by the fact that Narcissus' and the user's behaviour is motivated by the search of one's own mirror image, when that of Echo and the Reflectego are driven by distance. In this scenario a complex dance arises in which a conversation between object and user needs to be established, whilst the the communication of both is actuated by different senses.<br />

In this pattern control points are placed in several aligned knots in the grid. In the choice of points an optimum is aimed to reach the best movement with a minimum of control points. 20 points were then assigned for the placement of sensoring and actuation.<br />

Instead of the installation’s reflections only becoming an extension of the user, it is intended that the reflections in their turn become an individual entity of their own. Although they are in essence a direct result of the condition of an object in the physical world ( here i.e. user), they break away from being a passive consequence, as their constellation will also cause effect on the behavior of the user. Here a mutual dialog will emerge between origin and reflection.<br />

<h2>Actuation Problem & Possible Solution</h2><br />

During the design process several compromises regarding the physical prototype had to be made. Firstly, we chose to use actuation wheels with a large diameter to increase the speed of movement. During testing, however, this proved to create too much torque for the servomotors, several of which eventually broke. Another compromise we had to made was regarding the base material for the reflective surface. The xps foam that would have been light did not provide the smooth surface, thus the reflection was not satisfactory. We decided to add 2mm MDF plates to the xps foam. This provided the perfect reflection that we wanted, but also added extra weight to the system.<br />

Because of the above-mentioned problems, we had to make several last-minute changes to the project. The numbers of actuation points was reduced from 21 to 10, working on the sides. The center of the mirror surface is now fixed, suspended from the frame.<br />

A possible solution would be using stepper motors instead of the servo motors we are currently using.<br />

<h2>WHY?</h2><br />
Reflectego aims to discuss the balance of physical and imagery components in our brain’s construction of reality. The view and experience that we hold of space and our position in it consist of both actual objects and altered descriptions that we interpret to represent reality. <br />
The way this phenomenon works is through the programmed processing of common perspective. When the perspective in virtual images consensuses with the known physical world, our brain accepts this as possibly real. <br />

However with the world becoming increasingly digital, a new paradigm needs to be discussed in the relation between virtual and physical reality. With our project Reflectego we aim to do so by visually distorting the space in our surrounding and by unexpected repositioning of the self in relation to the environment through movement, awareness can be created of the proprioceptive determination and our self-perception in the twilight of the physical and virtual world.<br />

In a Kaleidoscope the constructed perceived image consists of actual physical objects and a multiplicity of reflections of this. In our project the user will become the physical object inside a kaleidoscope in which he sees his image scattered and recomposed as a result of his behavior.<br />

The starting point is a triangle with angles of 30/60/90 degrees,which is then divided into sections of different sizes. The choise of this base triangle allows for an indefinite repetition to form patterns of different scales of triangles, whilst the further division of this into different size sections allows for a visual randomness and improves the flow of movement.<br />

On the course of relation between the physical and virtual world, represented by the user and the Reflectego, the myth of Narcissus and Echo is projected. In this myth both personas are doomed: Narcissus to fall in love with his unreachable reflection, and Echo to be unable to speak independently but can only repeat what is said to her. The parallel in interaction is drawn by the fact that Narcissus' and the user's behaviour is motivated by the search of one's own mirror image, when that of Echo and the Reflectego are driven by distance. In this scenario a complex dance arises in which a conversation between object and user needs to be established, whilst the the communication of both is actuated by different senses.<br />

Human kind is inherently a social creature. Throughout the millennia of our existence, individuals have always banded together in order to survive and create environments that would be impossible without the collective effort. With the advent of the digital age, this social instinct has become mediated by the cyber-world where social media has taken over and redefined how we communicate with each other.<br />
<br />
This experience however creates a disconnect from the environment surrounding the user and by extension, other beings around him/her. The majority of the user's senses slowly become inert essentially rendering the individual a living vegetable subservient to the information given to them by the digital media. Is this the future of humanity?<br />
<br />
What if we could turn this around? What if the digital media could be used as a medium to bridge the current gap between strangers in a fun and active way that would invoke all the senses and reawaken their base social instincts? Where as a direct reflection of human social behaviour, options of what can be done exponentially increases according to the number of people involved. Thus emphasising the point of a collective achievement.<br />
<br />
One aspect which digital simulation currently relies heavily upon is the sense of sight. Highly realistic renderings are able to trick the viewer into believing that what they are seeing is a picture of a real place. It is even possible to enhance the image through computer programs to create a surreal image, one needs only to look at fashion magazines for such proof. That being said, the use of sound in the same context has mostly been used for background ambient purposes and is disconnected with the realism of the simulation. What would happen if realistic sounds within the simulation could be implemented to create a more complete sensorial experience? How could sound be stimulated by the movements and reactions of the virtual occupants to heighten the virtual experience? And finally, how could the resultant audio be used as a means to bring about cooperative behaviour in visitors through harmonious interaction.<br />

With these questions in mind, this installation serves as a means to investigate how sound can enhance a space by allowing visitors to control the virtual environment through the manipulation of tones in order to create varying affects within the space and its effects on the collective. <br />

<br />
While there are an innumerable amount of possible real life scenarios that could be selected in order to simulate through audio, it was important to settle on one that could be simpler to combine as a whole. During the concept stages of the project, it was decided that a series of musical tones would best serve the experiment due to the ease at which different tones could be combined into chords and therefore compositions.<br />
<br />
The existing composition is divided into several inherently different components each with their own set of identical controls. Visitors would then easily be able to change these controls through body movement, resulting in an ever changing composition. While multiple users could technically change their corresponding number of components to affect the composition, it is the activation of additional dormant controls that will truly improve the overall audio result. These higher level controls can only be active when the 2 or more users come into close proximity to each other thus forming a collective that has to work together in order to achieve a desired result. Just as in a band, each user will have to listen to the movements of his/her partner and vise versa.<br />

A critical but often overlooked virtual simulation not used by designers is the use of sound to create a sense of space. The majority of time spent on renders and animation is focused on visual stimuli through the use of photo real renderings with great attention to lighting and object detail. As a finishing touch, most of these concept pitches include a soundtrack in order to convey a desired effect. This is of course not a realistic portrayal of how the space might truly feel once it is actually constructed and put to use.<br />
<br />
Audio input is in many ways just as if not more important than ocular input. Sound gives us a 3-dimensional sense of space that is in many ways more 'real' due to its inherent role in giving us a sense of balance and by extension the ability to move through space. The size of a given space can also be determined through the use of an echo, giving inhabitants a good sense of the volume of the space. While it can be argued that the sense of sight is the primary agent used in this case, a forced perspective can trick the eye into seeing something that is not as it seems. <br />

With digital simulation taking center stage as an essential means of conveying a proposal and with the advent of computer assisted virtual environments (CAVE), audio simulations are poised to take a critical part of making a virtual space more believable.<br />

Sound and music has long been used as a medium by almost every culture as a means of social interaction and bonding. Building on this habit, this installation uses sound that is actuated by movement creating different audio outputs as a result. This in turn influences how the user's subsequent movement depending on how satisfied he/she is with the resultant sound. Multiple users creates richer compositions as more controls and sounds are added into the environment. As users coordinate their movements through trial and error, different compositions of sounds can result in unique musical outcomes. In this way, the human body becomes the instrument of interactivity and the influence of Synergetic Sound.<br />

A few simulations done concerning geometry shape & size, composition, sequencing and a little bit in material properties (stiffness and such) provides some information on what kind of feel we want to achieve as well as what will be difficult to do (such as making the creature stand, creating a shelter of some sorts) and also what a difference would be in using a different material.<br><br />

The Living Room wants an interaction relationship with the user that will make him ask questions about his attitude towards daily objects. Changing the user’s perception of the everyday environment comes with changing his attitude and behaviour towards what we perceive as inanimate objects.As children role play with their dolls, we see the environment as a real-time interaction with what seem to be lifeless objects. But what if the things around us have <i>a life of their own.</i> How do we deal with that? What do we do with that.<br />

The installation invites user to discover different possibilities of interaction: attitudes, behaviour, responses. As any living creature it has it’s own habits on it’s own. When it detects the user, they both go into an ’’interactive dance’’ in which there is no direct control, but establishing a report between the two. Thus there is a mutually changing relationship, one with the other.<br />

We have chosen to quantify some of the relationships between the user and installation, while others remain simple affordances of the LivingRoom.<br />
The main reaction from the LivingRoom range from big scale reactions to small scale reaction to user input. The reactions can be either localized or affecting the whole installation.<br />

<strong>Breathing</strong><br />
<br />
Staying true to the mechanism that allows the creature to be actuated, the intrinsic habits of the LivingRoom is one that uses the airflow. The air generates movement of the components, but also other reactions, such as breathing. The installation makes it presence known through inflating and deflating its surfaces.<br />

<strong>Arm</strong><br />
<br />
One of the movements of the installation is what we termed ’’the arm’’ since the mechanism works by actuating smaller triangles through the help of a bigger neighboring triangle. It acts either a limit for the user or a communication at the scale of the user.<br />

<strong>Shelter</strong><br />

The other movement of the installation is termed ”the shelter” due to the movement of bigger component triangles which can generate a protecting niche for the user. The LivingRoom works thus as a landscape, an interactive object and a room.<br />

<strong>Lights</strong><br />
<br />
The lights in the installation is also a means of communication between the LivingRoom and the user. The three colors also mirror the feelings of the object and, also, act as a link between multiple users. A different array of feelings are transmitted through the use of light through: flickering, fading slightly, the use of different colors.<br />

<strong>Air Supply</strong><br />
The mechanism of the living quality of the installation relies in airflow.As plants use chemical reactions to power their response with the world around them, the LivingRoom relies on the circulation of airflow and the correct coordination of the in-take and out-take of air pressure. The system of tubing triggers certain configurations of the triangles, the Arm, the Shelter, and the affordances in between, as well as the Breathing effect of the surfaces.<br />
These two diagrams show our set-up for the air supply. The diagram on the left makes clear how we get air in the surfaces in the configuration and the diagram on the right shows how we supply the joints with air.<br />

‘Performative Ecologies’ creates an interaction between a series of dancing robots and visitors. Rather than being pre-choreographed, these robots are able to learn how best to attract and maintain visitors’ attention by reading the visitors’ gestures. As the robots gain experience, they can also share their knowledge with each other, dancing to each other and negotiating future performances collaboratively. <br />
Reflection: The key part of this interaction is the learning process of these robots, which is achieved by a genetic algorithm. Designers tried to add a kind of artificial intelligence to the dancing robots. But from our perspective, this is still not a true intelligence because the performance of the robots is inevitably constrained by the inner coding which is already choreographed. As a result, visitors could probably foresee the reaction of robots after playing with them several times.<br />

Both ‘Constellaction’ and ‘Light Interventions’ are constituted by groups of very simple units with light. In the former project, people are allowed to compose these pyramid-units in any way they want and create complicated and strong results. In the latter project, these units are placed ‘randomly’ in anonymous or unnoticed places in city to highlight these places. It is a kind of reminder and redevelopment of these unnoticed spaces without building a true thing there. <br />
Reflection: In our opinion, this kind of ‘bottom-up’ design provides more space to people to interact with the products. In the process of interaction, players are designers at the same time. But in these two projects, the variety of performance of these units seems too less.<br />

We have developed several innovative designs for a new kind of robot that uses peristalsis, the method of locomotion used by earthworms. Unlike previous wormlike robots, our concept uses a continuously deformable outer mesh that interpolates the body position between discrete actuators. Proposed future development includes the communication of robots amongst themselves; sharing information with the inclusion of a learning system can lead to a robotic swarm that is aware of the amount and type of interactions and could change behaviour accordingly. The proposed behaviour would be altered in a way that the result of any interaction is decided by a system of chance rather than a rigid 'if a, then b' logic. For example: if the prototype is approached from the front more often, the chance of it backing away becomes higher. RoboZoo aims at establishing the artificial environment of the interactive swarm of robots. Synergetic integrity with such a substance is the subject of our interest. Investigation of models of behaviours plays a paramount role in the presented concept. The possibility of shaping the environment by artificial creatures bring about the potential for dynamic system and its adaptability to the outer and inner changes.<br />

Motion and visual expression of each independent robot evokes instantenous response in the environment. People perceiving remodelled swarm of artficial creatures are forced to reestablish themsleves in the space in real time. Borders are constituted mutually by robots and humans, as they are sending signals to respective sensors. Therefore they are both altering behaviours.<br />
<br />
Mutual communications between both people and robots actuate the ceasless spatial reconfiguration. Robotic sensors are detecting every change in the ecosystem and trigger a constant loop of unexpected transformations. The balance between autonomy and control induces people to discover each independent principle. These essences trigger effortless processes of comprehension and immediate interaction.<br />

While society is increasingly driven by interactive systems and computer numerically controlled (CNC) production, Hyperbody’s MSc 2 studio embarks on a quest challenging the traditional role of architectural production and operation by exploring the potential of interactive systems embedded in architecture.<br />
The site for the MSc 2 project is in Protospace at the faculty of Architecture (BK) and the aim is to advance practical applications for Non-standard and Interactive Architecture (NS&IA), whereas Non-standard Architecture is defined as an architecture that departs from modernist, repetitive mass-production in order to deal with digitally driven mass-customization, while Interactive Architecture establishes a link between environment, users and building components by means of embedded sensor-actuator technology.<br />

The MSc 2 Design studio will operate on the premise that bodily motion and non-verbal communication can be understood as interfaces of emotional expression and cognition. The idea of creating a proactive behavior loop between the body, the physical and ambient space it operates within as well as the tools and techniques offered by contemporary new media technologies shall be a central operational logic driving the studio. Students are encouraged to understand and conceive architectural space as an instrument, which on its own is reduced to an objectified entity. The behavioral engagement of the body, ambient parameters such as sound, light, tactility etc. and the physicality of architectural space into an inter-activating systemic entity shall thus progressively create new modes of communication and perception. The studio shall thus challenge the students to create physical and digital prototypes establishing this correlation in real-time and present their visions on this synergistic ecology of expression. The idea of creating a proactive behavior loop between the body, the physical and ambient space it operates within as well as the tools and techniques offered by contemporary new media technologies shall be a central operational logic driving the studio. Students are encouraged to understand and conceive architectural space as an instrument, which on its own is reduced to an objectified entity. The behavioral engagement of the body, ambient parameters such as sound, light, tactility etc. and the physicality of architectural space into an inter-activating systemic entity shall thus progressively create new modes of communication and perception. The studio shall thus challenge the students to create physical and digital prototypes establishing this correlation in real-time and present their visions on this synergistic ecology of expression. Connecting physical, organic and digital domains shall also heighten the sense of abstraction within the students and provide new modes for conceiving interaction scenarios.<br />

Sound and music has long been used as a medium by almost every culture as a means of social interaction and bonding. Building on this habit, this installation uses sound that is actuated by movement creating different audio outputs as a result. This in turn influences how the user's subsequent movement depending on how satisfied he/she is with the resultant sound. Multiple users creates richer compositions as more controls and sounds are added into the environment. As users coordinate their movements through trial and error, different compositions of sounds can result in unique musical outcomes. In this way, the human body becomes the instrument of interactivity and the influence of Synergetic Sound.<br />
